Day 3 - Abu Dhabi

Saturday, November 18th, 2017

After a late breakfast to rest up after our journey, we start our explorations of Abu Dhabi. Abu Dhabi, the capital of the United Arab Emirates, sits off the mainland on an island in the Persian Gulf. Its focus on oil exports and commerce is reflected by the skyline’s modern towers and mega shopping centres. A stroll along the Corniche offers a glimpse of everyday Abu Dhabi life and a chance to savour some picturesque scenes. We visit the Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque, an architectural work of art and one the world’s largest mosques with a capacity for an astonishing 40,000 worshippers. Then, we stop at Heritage Village. This reconstruction of a traditional oasis village provides an interesting glimpse into the Emirate’s past. We take a photo opportunity at the Emirates Palace - an iconic Abu Dhabi landmark which blends luxurious Arabian splendour with the latest technology to create a magical site.

Today we make our way to Yaz Island where we have the opportunity to see Ferrari World. This was created in tribute to Ferrari’s passion, heritage, excellence, innovation and performance. Here, there is shopping, dining, rides, and shows to entertain us.

Day 5 - Masdar City - Qasr al Hosn

Monday, November 20th, 2017

Today we depart our hotel, and start with a visit to the interesting Masdar City. This is a planned city project, designed by the British architectural firm Foster and Partners. The city relies on solar energy and other renewable energy sources. Masdar City hosts the headquarters of the International Renewable Energy Agency and is designed to be a hub for cleantech companies. Next is Abu Dhabi’s symbolic birthplace, Qasr al Hosn. This is the emirate’s first permanent structure and was home to the ruling Al Nahyan family. A permanent, free-to-enter exhibition at the Qasr al Hosn Centre tells the story of Abu Dhabi and its people. Then we are off to Dubai where we will check into our hotel for the next 6 nights.

No visit to Dubai is complete without a stop to admire the world’s tallest building. Even the journey upwards will entertain and educate us as we watch a multimedia presentation chronicling Dubai’s exotic history and the development of the Burj Khalifa. The view from the top will give you an overview of the entire city to get your bearings. Then we'll wander through Dubai Mall, and head on to visit to Jumeirah Palms to see that development. Here we can see the Atlantis hotel and water park, or the aquarium in the hotel. This evening we delight in the Bateaux Dubai dinner cruise for a four course meal and wonderful views of the creek side souks.

Then, at the old trading centre of Bur Dubai, we visit the Textile Souk and browse through an endless selection of raw silk and cotton, then we must visit the Gold Souk to see the worlds largest gold ring and the Spice Souk to see how commerce takes place in Dubai. Next is a photo stop at Burj Al Arab, renowned for being the top rated hotel in the world with its stellar authentic design. In the afternoon we venture into the desert, giving us a taste of the true heartland of Arabia. Our safari tour takes us right into the core of the desert, where huge sand dunes wait eagerly. We take a stroll around the harbour, watching local fisherman sort their hauls, and then continue the drive along the coastal road. We will stop at the Sandy Beach Hotel and Resort where we will enjoy a lunch buffet. After our lunch, we have a couple of hours to wander the beach and enjoy the local sights, then we continue to Badiyah, a town known for its lovely mosque and one of the UAE’s oldest places of worship. Then we visit the busy port town of Khor Fakkan, where we may stroll the waterfront and appreciate the palm trees and lush gardens. Our last stop for the day is in Fujairah, the largest of the east coast towns. The town’s claim to fame is Fujairah Fort, and our guide will take us on a walk around the landmark, relating its history. The impressive 17th-century fort was badly damaged by a British bombardment in the early 20th century, but it has been completely restored. Finally, we travel back to Dubai and dinner at the hotel.
