Day 1 - Departure Day

Our exciting journey begins as we meet our fellow travellers at the airport, where we will board our overnight flight to Europe, ready to start on an odyssey filled with new and memorable experiences.

Day 2 - Budapest

Friday, July 14th, 2017

Canals at DuskToday we arrive in Budapest, a UNESCO World Heritage Site (WHS) and are met by Viking cruise staff, then transferred to the ship. After boarding, the afternoon is free to explore or join an organized walk to Budapest's famous covered market. Onboard ship tonight is a traditional Hungarian dinner.

Day 3 - Budapest

Saturday, July 15th, 2017

Budapest Parliament BuildingsThe Danube River divides this Hungarian capital city into Buda and Pest. Today we will explore both parts, starting with Pest’s National Opera House and historic Heroes’ Square. In Buda, we will stroll up Fishermen’s Hill to Fishermen’s Bastion and Matthias Church. We enjoy lunch aboard with the rest of the day free to explore on our own. You may wish to visit the Art Nouveau Gellért Spa, or one of the many other lavish facilities in this “City of Healing Waters.”

Schonbrunn PalaceEnjoy a day of scenic cruising along the beautiful Danube toward Vienna, arriving early this evening. After dinner, relax or take in an optional classical concert.

Day 5 - Vienna

Monday, July 17th, 2017

Parliament BuildingsToday we tour the Austrian capital of Vienna, (WHS). We ride along Vienna’s Ringstrasse, which replaced the city walls in the mid-19th century. We will also see Vienna’s world-famous Opera House, St. Stephan’s Cathedral and Hofburg Palace. We return aboard for lunch and the rest of the day is free to further explore Vienna’s many cafés and museums. Or we may wish to take in an optional tour of Schönbrunn Palace (WHS), the “Versailles of Vienna,” erected in 1778.

Day 6 - Melk

Tuesday, July 18th, 2017

Melk MonasteryEnjoy a morning of scenic cruising through the Wachau Valley (WHS). Then we visit the abbey at Melk, a 900-year-old Benedictine monastery featuring Austria’s finest Italian baroque architecture. See its wonderful frescoes and admire the comprehensive collection of medieval manuscripts in its library. We rejoin our ship, and cruise through dinner.

Day 7 - Passau

Wednesday, July 19th, 2017

Passau Aerial ViewThis morning, we arrive in Passau situated at the confluence of the Inn, Ilz and Danube Rivers. A guided walk along the narrow streets winds through the Old Town past traditional patrician houses. We see the New Bishop’s Residence and visit the impressive baroque St. Stephen’s Cathedral with its ornate interior. Inside, as a special treat, listen to a concert played on the 17,000-pipe organ, considered Europe’s largest church organ. After lunch onboard, we have some free time to explore Passau. We return to the ship for dinner and cruise through the night.

Day 8 - Regensburg

Thursday, July 20th, 2017

Stone Bridge, RegensburgWe arrive in Regensburg (WHS) after breakfast and tour this wonderfully preserved medieval city. Sights include structures dating back to Roman times. Discover many 13th and 14th century patrician houses and see the splendid St. Peter’s Cathedral. During free time we could visit the Alte Wurstküche (Old Sausage Kitchen), Germany’s oldest restaurant. We return to the ship and cruise through dinner.

Day 9 - Nuremberg

Friday, July 21st, 2017

Nuremberg Old TownThis morning as we cruise to Nuremburg, perhaps attend a noteworthy presentaton about the European Union. Upon arrival, we disembark and visit the ruins of Zeppelin Field, used in the 1930s as Nazi parade grounds. Next we see the Palace of Justice, site of the famous Nuremberg Trials. We can spend some free time exploring Nuremberg’s Old Town area, or join an optional World War II history tour, including the Documentation Centre Museum.

Day 10 - Bamberg

Saturday, July 22nd, 2017

Bamberg CityHallEnjoy a tour of Bamberg, with its medieval city centre (WHS). A walking tour includes a visit to the magnificent 11th-century cathedral, reworked in late Romanesque style in the 13th century, and the picturesque city hall built on a tiny island in the middle of a river. Take some free time to enjoy Bamberg and sample some of the town’s distinctive smoke-flavoured beer before returning aboard.

Day 11 - Würzburg

Sunday, July 23rd, 2017

Residenz in WurzburgAfter breakfast, we tour Würzburg’s Bishops’ Residenz, one of Germany’s largest and most ornate baroque palaces (WHS). Enjoy scenic afternoon cruising, or take an optional excursion along Germany’s "Romantic Road" to Rothenburg, which features a turreted city wall and lovely Gothic and baroque architecture. Onboard, this evening see a glassblowing demonstration.

Day 12 - Wertheim

Monday, July 24th, 2017

Wertheim is located at the confluence of the Main and Tauber Rivers. During a morning walking tour, experience life in a typical small German town. Stop in a bakery and a butcher shop, and learn about Wertheim’s glassblowing tradition. Enjoy free time to explore before returning to your ship for lunch.

Day 13 - Koblenz and Middle Rhine

Tuesday, July 25th, 2017

Rhine and Moselle Rivers MeetToday we cruise past hilltop castles along a stunning stretch of the river known as the Middle Rhine (WHS). We pass the Lorelei Rock, which marks the river’s narrowest point; the rock is named for a local legend about Rhine Maidens who lured sailors to their doom. Later, we'll stop to visit Marksburg Castle, the only Rhine fortress never destroyed. We rejoin the ship in Koblenz and dine onboard.

Day 14 - Cologne

Wednesday, July 26th, 2017

Cologne CathedralThis morning we have a tour of Cologne, including a visit to the Dom, Germany’s largest cathedral (WHS). Afterwards, we have free time to explore on our own - Roman ruins, interesting neighbourhoods and wonderful museums. Lunch and dinner are served aboard. We depart this evening.

Day 15 - Kinderdijk

Thursday, July 27th, 2017

Dutch WindmillsThis morning, we sail along the Rhine enjoying scenic views and sampling popular Dutch cheeses and jenever - a distilled juniper liquor; or try playing sjoelen (Dutch table shuffleboard). After lunch, we disembark at Kinderdijk (WHS). We tour this fascinating network of windmills and other ingenious flood management technologies. Learn why the windmills were built and see how they work, plus enter a working windmill for a tour of its mechanisms and living quarters. We arrive in Amsterdam after midnight.

Day 16 - Amsterdam - Return home

This morning after breakfast, we are taken to the airport for our flight home, where family and friends are waiting to hear about our exciting adventure.
