Come along on this charming tour of England. From our arrival in Manchester we head to the Beatles city of Liverpool. We travel south to discover medieval towns like Chester, Shrewsbury and Stratford. Enjoy a drive through the outstanding natural beauty of the Cotswolds with its picturesque villages and historical castles. See Blenheim Palace once home to Sir Winston Churchill, and Highclere Castle which was the main setting for the acclaimed TV show Downton Abbey! We continue to the south coast to admire the seaside vistas by way of Portsmouth - home base for the Royal Navy; and Brighton with its boardwalk and lovely pebbled shoreline. Next, we travel east to the coast of the famed “White Cliffs” of Dover where we visit the castle with a maze of secret, hidden tunnels; and Canterbury renowned for the cathedral which is the seat of the Archbishop of Canterbury. Finally we spend three nights in the exciting and beguiling city of London!

Day 2 - Liverpool - Chester

Wednesday, August 8th, 2018

BeatlesStoryToday we arrive in Manchester where we are met by our guide and directed to our waiting coach. We continue to Liverpool, a UNESCO World Heritage Site (WHS) where we see the Albert Docks, and take in the Beatles Story. Then we visit Liverpool Cathedral, before making our way to Chester and our hotel for the next two nights.

Day 3 - Chester tour - Free time

WalledRomancityAfter a restful night's sleep, we have a walking tour of the city of Chester. Founded as a Roman fortress in the 1st century AD, it's known for its extensive Roman walls made of local red sandstone. In the old city, the Rows is a shopping district distinguished by 2-level covered arcades and Tudor-style half-timber buildings. A Roman amphitheatre, with ongoing excavations, lies just outside the old city's walls. After our tour we are free to explore on our own or head back to the shopping district to get a head start on some souvenir shopping.

Day 4 - Shrewsbury - Stratford

Friday, August 10th, 2018

Shakespeare's BirthplaceToday we make our way to the beautiful Garden city of Shrewsbury, and enjoy a walking tour of the city which is the county town for Shropshire England. Set amidst glorious countryside near the Welsh Borders, it is one of England's finest medieval market towns. We'll see the timber-framed black & white buildings, steep narrow streets and alleyways. Visit the Castle, now a regimental museum, and see the many references around the town to Charles Darwin, who was born and educated here. After a break for lunch we continue to Stratford and our hotel for the next two nights.

Day 5 - Stratford - Warwick Castle

Anne Hathaway's CottageToday we tour Stratford, visiting Shakespeare's home and wandering the High street. Next we see Ann Hathaway's cottage, and then travel out to see the amazing Warwick Castle, established by William the Conqueror in 1068. We return to Stratford, where tonight we may attend a play.

Day 6 - Cotswolds - Blenheim Palace

Sunday, August 12th, 2018

Blenheim PalaceWe leave Stratford this morning and it's off to the Cotswolds, an area of outstanding natural beauty characterized by green rolling hills and picturesque small towns and villages such as Stow-on-the-Wold, Burton-on-the-Water and Bibury, built from the local Cotswold stone. We enjoy afternoon tea and explore some of these quaint villages before we travel on to visit Blenheim Palace (WHS). Boasting a long and diverse history, it is home to the 12th Duke of Marlborough and his family, and was the birth place of Sir Winston Churchill. Blenheim is Britain's greatest Palace, and was built between 1705 and 1733. Today the palace and gardens are one of the finest heritage attractions in the UK. Finally, we drive to our hotel near Oxford.

Day 7 - Oxford - Highclere Castle

Monday, August 13th, 2018

DowntownAbbeyToday we have a short drive through Oxford University and see Christchurch. Next we travel to Bampton, the home of the hit series Downton Abbey. We'll visit the Cottage Hospital, and the Parish church and have the opportunity to see Highclere Castle, the main site of Downton Abbey. After our visit we drive to Portsmouth and our hotel for the evening.

Day 8 - Portsmouth - Brighton - Canterbury

Tuesday, August 14th, 2018

HMSVictoryAfter breakfast this morning, we check out of the hotel, and stop to visit the HMS Victory. The Victory is the Royal Navy's most famous warship, best known for her role in the Battle of Trafalgar. She currently has a dual role as the Flagship of the First Sea Lord and as a living museum to the Georgian Navy. Then we see the HMS Warrior - the fastest, largest and most powerful warship in the world when she was launched. We continue to Brighton to have a break for lunch, and an opportunity to wander the famous beach area. Our next stop is Canterbury where we stay for the next three nights.

Day 9 - Tour Canterbury - Free Time

Wednesday, August 15th, 2018

Canterbury CathedralToday we tour the sights of Canterbury, starting with a visit to Canterbury Cathedral. It dates back to 597AD when St Augustine became the first Archbishop, establishing his seat in Canterbury. Then we see the ruins of St Augustine's Abbey, which include the remains of the monastery where the monks lived and worshiped. St Augustine first worshiped with his followers in St Martin's Church. These three sites are recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site (WHS). This afternoon we are free to learn about Geoffrey Chaucer and his colorful characters on their pilgrimage from London to Canterbury, or take a stroll along the sculptors trail around the old city.

Day 10 - Day Trip to Dover

Thursday, August 16th, 2018

WhiteCliffsWe take a short ride to the city of Dover, "The White Cliffs Country". Our first stop is at the famous White Cliffs to get a view of what the pilots in the second world war saw as the safety of home when returning from missions in Europe. We visit the Battle of Britain Memorial. Next we will tour Deal Castle, one of the finest Tudor artillery castles in England. Today you can explore the whole castle, from the exciting dark passages to the first floor captain's residence. Then after a break for lunch, we visit Dover Castle and discover 2000 years of history. Step inside the Great Tower and immerse yourself in the medieval world and royal court of King Henry ll. Later, we return to our hotel in Canterbury.

Day 11 - Chartwell House - London

Friday, August 17th, 2018

Buckingham PalaceToday we depart Canterbury and make our way to the exciting city of London. Along the way, we stop to visit Chartwell house in Westerham, the home of Sir Winston Churchill for forty years. Churchill bought the property in September 1922 and lived there until shortly before his death in January 1965. In London, as we head to our hotel, we enjoy a few sights from the large windows of our coach. After dinner tonight we will enjoy a play in London's West End.

Day 12 - London City Tour

Saturday, August 18th, 2018

Westminster AbbeyOur city tour today takes us to Buckingham Palace where we have the opportunity to see the changing of the guard, and then hopefully if the Queen is away, we will have the opportunity to tour the palace itself. Then it's off to Westminster Abbey, and the nearby Palace of Westminster - meeting place of the House of Commons and the House of Lords, the two houses of the Parliament of the United Kingdom.

Day 13 - London Sightseeing

Sunday, August 19th, 2018

London Eye DuskAnother day of exploring this amazing city! First we travel to see St Paul's Cathedral, which is an Anglican cathedral, and the seat of the Bishop of London and the mother church of the Diocese of London. It sits on Ludgate Hill at the highest point of the City of London. We will enjoy a short tour of the Cathedral, and then attend a Sunday service. Next we visit the Tower of London, followed by a ride on the British Airways "London Eye". This evening we celebrate our final night in London with dinner and a play, again in the theatre district.

Day 14 - Return Home

Monday, August 20th, 2018

This morning we'll travel to Heathrow Airport for our return flight, with fresh memories of our tour and the new friends we have made along the way. While we may be sad that our trip is over, we are excited about returning home to share our experiences with family and friends.
