Through hills, woodland and coastal villages, many of the country’s most iconic trails are situated in this region of Liguria. Enjoy a great introduction to Italy, or if you've been before, enjoy again the ample opportunities for walking, relaxing and sampling delicious food and wine.|
We arrive at the seaside town of Moneglia, the base for our exciting walking tour of Italy's Cinque Terre. Beautifully located in the heart of a bay on the Mediterranean sea, the picture-postcard town is listed on the "I Borghi Più Belli d'Italia" (Most Beautiful Villages of Italy).
Today, we transfer to Rapallo by train and take the cable car up Montallegro. Here we stop to take in the fantastic views and then walk down to Chiavari. Our coastal walk will take us through holm oak forests and maquis shrubland. Again we enjoy spectacular views as we make our way to the typical Ligurian seaside villages of Deiva Marina and Framura. (approximate walk 10km).
Today we will set out to visit one of Italy's great treasures and about as beautiful a coastline as you’re likely to find in Europe, the famous 'Cinque Terre' (Five Lands). We take the train to Cinque Terre National Park where the stunning paths reveal Liguria's prettiest villages. This area has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site (WHS) since 1997. Our walk begins from the famous Sentiero Azzurro Ligure (Ligurian Blue Path). We will walk through terraced vineyards and olive groves on old mule tracks which connect the five picturesque villages. (approximate walk 12 km) *Note, some sections of the path may be closed so a train may be taken)
This morning we travel by train to the charming coastal town of Santa Margherita Ligure. From here we traverse the peninsula to the world-renowned fishing village of Portofino. Once a sleepy fishing village it is now a playground for the rich and famous. (approximate walk 13km)
Meals: Breakfast, Lunch
Today we enjoy a free day to relax, take optional walks, try kayaking or visit nearby Lucca or Genoa. This well-earned break is an opportunity to spend the day relaxing at the beach, or for the more energetic to do some sightseeing. Genoa, the region’s capital city was the home of Christopher Columbus, and also houses the largest aquarium in Europe - not to be missed. Alternatively, we may use the day to visit the beautiful town of Lucca.
This morning we will take a short train ride to Rapallo and a cable car up to the sanctuary of Montallegro. From here we will set out on a walk through quiet woodland, catching glimpses of the Ligurian sea on the way to the seaside town of Chiavari. Then, in the early evening we will have the chance to enjoy the local speciality at our well-deserved wine tasting! (approximate walk 9 km)
Meals: Breakfast, Lunch
This morning we will head back to the famous Cinque Terre to walk some of the quieter and alternative trails. The exact path we will walk will depend on the track conditions. Generally they are on higher ground than the classic Sentiero Azzuro, offering even more spectacular views of the coastline and villages. (approximate walk 9 km)
After breakfast today we say goodbye to our new friends as our Cinque Terre walk comes to an end.
