Day 1 - St. John's, Newfoundland

St. John'sOur exciting journey begins! We arrive in the colourful coastal city of St. John's, Newfoundland. The province's capital is a delightful blend of old-world charm and new-world elegance.

Day 2 - St. John's - Nature cruise

Friday, August 18th, 2017

Witless Bay eco reserveWe come to know North America’s oldest and eastern most city on a tour highlighting Signal Hill, Cape Spear lighthouse, Government House and the Basilica of St. John the Baptist. Watch for puffins while on a nature cruise to Witless Bay Ecological Reserve where millions of seabirds gather to nest. A local specialist joins us for a talk on the marine life in the region, especially the thousands of Humpback and Minke whales who make this their home.

Day 3 - Cupids Cove

cupids coveToday, we drive the picturesque coastal route that surrounds stunning Conception Bay, making a stop in charming Brigus to spend some time in a traditional Newfoundland fishing village. Then it’s on to Cupids Cove Plantation, an active archaeological dig on the site of the first attempt at permanent English settlement in what would become Canada. An expert joins us for a private tour at Cupids Legacy Centre which reveals life in the early 1600s and where we get to know the culture during a musical performance. Later, we go to the archaeological site where historic treasures have been uncovered for more than 20 years!

Day 4 - Clarenville - Cape Bonavista

Bonavista lighthouse, NewfoundlandToday we visit Trinity Village and relive days gone by during visits to the historic buildings including the Georgian Lester-Garland House and the Green Family Forge - a living history blacksmith museum. At Cape Bonavista, we pause at the lighthouse to take in the sweeping views and may even spot an iceberg!

Day 5 - Terra Nova NP - Twilingate - Gander

Monday, August 21st, 2017

Twillingate lighthouseWe travel to breathtaking Terra Nova National Park where the forest meets the sea. Stand in awe of the park’s towering cliffs and tranquil bays. Spend some time exploring the Marine Atlantic Centre which features an interactive exhibit introducing the region’s marine life. Next, we head to Twillingate’s Long Point Lighthouse, a location that affords prime viewing over the famous Iceberg Alley. This evening, be prepared for a rollicking good time at a traditional Newfoundland gathering known as a “Jiggs dinner.”

Day 6 - Gander - Rocky Harbour

Rocky Harbour clotheslineToday we depart Gander and trace Newfoundland's natural and human history at the Mary March Museum. Later, we arrive in Rocky Harbour for a two-night stay.

Day 7 - Gros Morne National Park

Wednesday, August 23rd, 2017

Gros MorneDiscover what makes Gros Morne a UNESCO World Heritage Site (WHS). This morning we visit the Discovery Centre to learn how natural forces have shaped the park’s dramatic landscapes, among the most spectacular in Atlantic Canada! Then, we explore Tableland Mountains and uncover the park’s hidden fjords, stark peaks and highland tundra. Next, we board a boat to experience the fjords from a water perspective, watch for whales and eagles while listening to traditional Newfoundland music. Become an honorary Newfoundlander by participating in a “Screech-In” ceremony and seal the deal with a shot of rum. Tonight, we enjoy a delicious dinner while overlooking the scenic waters of the Gulf of St. Lawrence.

Day 8 - St. Anthony

L'Anse aux Meadows Historic SiteWe drive along the Viking Trail to L’Anse aux Meadows (WHS), and travel back to A.D. 1000 when Vikings first made landfall. See how Newfoundlanders have adapted to this forbidding landscape and experience firsthand their unique solutions to living under extreme conditions. Later, a visit to an economuseum reveals how we can make jams, sauces and vinegars from the famous local partridgeberry and bakeapple.

Day 9 - L'Anse au Clair, Labrador

Friday, August 25th, 2017

Red BayBoard a ferry this morning and cross the Straits of Belle Isle to Labrador. Learn about the history and importance of whaling to this region as we pass by colourful fishing villages. Arrive in Red Bay and spend some time at Red Bay National historic Site (WHS) where the traditions of Basque whalers in the 16th century are recounted.

Day 10 - Corner Brook

Saturday, August 26th, 2017

Corner BrookA morning ferry ride returns us to Newfoundland. Today’s journey takes us along the roads that Captain James Cook travelled back in 1770. Sit back and admire the spectacular scenery that unfolds along the way. Be sure to have your camera ready!

Day 11 - Bay of Islands - Lark Harbour

Sunday, August 27th, 2017

butterfly houseWalk in the footsteps of a great explorer at Captain James Cook National Historic Site, our first visit today. Then, we stop at the breathtaking Bay of Islands before we continue to picturesque Lark Harbour. This afternoon, we make our way to the Butterfly House to behold hundreds of vibrant butterflies and enjoy the tranquility of the garden. Later, we enjoy a discussion by a stone specialist on labradorite, a colourful stone that is said to have mystical powers. Tonight, a trio known as the “Sharecroppers” will delight us with a variety of traditional and original songs.

Day 12 - Corner Brook - return home

Rocky Harbour MarinaWe are taken to the airport to board our flight home filled with wonderful memories from our most easterly province and another amazing part of this beautiful country.
