Island overviewThe largest of the US Virgin Islands, St. Croix's rural expanses are dotted with the stately ruins of old sugar mills. Calm seas and a naturally deep harbor lured settlers to build this major port town along the island's west coast. Fort Frederik was constructed in 1753 as a defense against pirates and other colonizing nations. Today it is a bright-red confection on the waterfront. The town is named for Frederick V of Denmark, then king of the dual nation of Denmark-Norway. The town's rich Victorian architecture has graced the streets since the late 19th century, built after labor rioters set fires during the "Fireburn," one of the island's most pivotal historic moments.
